Taipa
There are three stories that explain how taipa could be named, because people are not quite sure.
The first story is about how Kauri and another chief who fought over the kaimoana in the Taipa Estuary. In the end they compromised and built a dividing fence to separate two sides of the river. This ment each tribe had equal chances at the food. If someone tried to steal from the other side and were caught the were killed.
In the second story Kauri said that all one had to do, was put one’s hand in the sea water to touch some form of kaimoana, because there were so much of it
Lastly historians believe that long ago a tidal wave washed over the pa on the sea shore, which was submerged. When everyone recovered they called the place taipa.
So which story do you think is right? Maybe it was just one or all of them.
Kauri- The chief
Kaimoana- seafood
Taipa- fence
Pa- touch
Pa- a fortified village
