Te hapua

                                              Te hapua

Generations ago it wasn't called Te hapua it was called Te hopua. Hapua means a large kind of pond.

When the Te aupouri tribe came north from the hokianga area. One of their chiefs was chasing whales in those days.

The people of Te Aupouri were quick to take advantage of this and they dragged ashore as many or the big creatures as possible. The whaling headquarters were at a place called tom bowling bay. When the ships called into Te hapua. The moari  traded exchanged this oil for tools and blankets.

When the gum in dusty was flourishing, coastal boats would call at Te hapua. And Te hapua became a depot for trading gum. Because of this depot Te hapua was being used for, the name changed to Te hapua meaning depot.

Te hopua- large kind of pond.
Te hapua- depot.
Te Aupouri- the tribe.

Te hora- whale.

How taipa got its name.

                       Taipa

There are three stories that explain how taipa could be named, because people are not quite sure.

The first story is about how Kauri and another chief who fought over the kaimoana in the Taipa Estuary. In the end they compromised and built a dividing fence to separate two sides of the river. This ment each tribe had equal chances at the food. If someone tried to steal from the other side and were caught the were killed.

In the second story Kauri said that all one had to do, was put one’s hand in the sea water to touch some form of kaimoana, because there were so much of it

Lastly historians believe that long ago a tidal wave  washed over the pa on the sea shore, which was submerged. When everyone recovered they called the place taipa.

So which story do you think is right? Maybe it was just one or all of them.

Kauri- The chief
Kaimoana- seafood
Taipa- fence
Tai- seawater
Pa- touch

Pa- a fortified village

How Ahipara got its name

                              Ahipara

There were two tribes in the north, Te Rarawa and te Aupouri. These two tribes were constantly at war over 90 mile beach. After many battles Te Rarawa under their chief Poroa who pushed Te Aupouri towards the north end of the beach. They had to put a line across the beach  as a boundary.

Poroa was given a wife, her name was Wangatauatia. When poroa had returned to his pa, he had named his pa after his wife.

The peace between the tribes went on for many years until poroa had died. During this time taking of the fish, birds and shellfish from the beach was strictly prohibited, this ban was called Rahui.

When the tapu was lifted, a great feast was held. They would catch some fish and shellfish and they would cook it on a special fire.

It was from this from this offering that Ahipara was named

Parapara- The roast fish that was put aside for a offering.
Poroa- the chief of Te Rarawa.
Whangatauatia- Poroa wife.
Te Aupouri- The tribe to the north.

Ahipara- The place in our story today.
